Claim Rejections Spike on NPI Deadline

Claim rejections soared May 23, 2008, the first day that National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) were required.

Rejection of Medicare and Medicaid claims quadrupled, while rejection of claims processed by Blues plans doubled, “Modern Physician” reported.

Insurers stopped accepting legacy identifiers on May 23, 2008, rejecting claims with a legacy identifier in any provider field.

To find another provider’s NPI, visit the NPI registry website. For more information on NPIs, visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website.
